Prada's playful sister

Miuccia Prada founded Miu Miu in 1993 and named the brand after her nickname. While Prada looks clean and rather austere, Miu Miu is more playful and daring. Bows, crystals, studs and soft, quilted leather are typical. Like Prada, it's made in Italy, and many bags share leathers and workmanship with their big sister. Inside, they usually have a label with the Miu Miu lettering and a note that they were made in Italy.

Materials at a glance

Matelassé nappa leather is soft, quilted lambskin with light padding, the signature of many models. Vitello Lux is smooth, supple calfskin, Vitello Shine a slightly glossy version. Vitello Daino is soft and grained. On top of that there's suede, velvet, patent leather and embellishments in crystal or metal.

Popular models

The Matelassé line in quilted nappa leather is typical, often with a metal logo on the front, as a shoulder bag, clutch or Wallet on Chain. The Bow Bag in Vitello Lux has small bows on the sides. The Coffer is a top handle bag with a padlock, the Wander a small hobo bag, the Arcadie a structured top handle bag. Vintage models with crystal embellishment are also in demand. Many models come in bold colours such as red, pink or blue, but also in black, grey and beige, so you'll find bags for simple and statement outfits alike.

Vintage or newer?

Older Miu Miu bags from the 2000s and early 2010s often feature soft leather, bows and studs. Newer models are more compact and look more graphic. Both have their fans, many models pair well with Prada pieces, and the playful vintage pieces in particular are in demand again today.

For everyday use, top handle bags in Vitello Daino or Vitello Lux are a good choice because they offer space and hold their shape. For evenings, clutches and small shoulder bags in Matelassé leather or with crystals are a good fit. What to look for when buying

Soft nappa leather shows pressure marks and scratches sooner than firmer leather. Check the corners, handles, quilting seams and the condition of the hardware.
