A Parisian house with clean shapes

Céline Vipiana founded the house in Paris in 1945, starting with children's shoes. Leather goods and fashion came later. The Macadam pattern and the Triomphe logo, inspired by the chain at the Arc de Triomphe, were created in the 1970s. Under Phoebe Philo the brand became known for minimal shapes from 2008. In 2018 Hedi Slimane dropped the accent from the name and brought back the Triomphe logo. That's why you'll find both spellings with us: Céline and Celine.

Materials at a glance

Smooth calfskin looks elegant and refined, but shows scratches and corner wear sooner. Grained calfskin is tougher and more forgiving. Drummed calfskin has a soft, tumbled surface. Triomphe canvas is a coated fabric with the logo pattern, Macadam the vintage pattern from the 1970s. On top of that there's suede and combinations of several colours, such as the Tricolor models.

Popular models

The Luggage, with its side wings, defined the 2010s. The Phantom is its bigger, softer sister. The Classic Box is a structured shoulder bag with a metal clasp, the Belt Bag a compact top handle bag with a folded strap. The Triomphe has the logo as its clasp, and the Teen Triomphe is the smaller version. Vintage pieces with the Macadam pattern, such as the Boston, are also in demand.

Which Celine suits you?

For everyday use, models in grained leather or Triomphe canvas are a good choice because they're less delicate. The Luggage Mini has room for all the essentials and works as a top handle bag for the office as well as the weekend. If you're looking for a crossbody bag, the Classic Box, Teen Triomphe or Claude offer structured shapes with a long strap. For travel, a Boston in Macadam canvas works well. What to look for when buying

Smooth leather shows scratches and corner wear sooner than grained leather. On the Luggage, check the handles, wings and zip; on the Box, the edges and the clasp. Inside you'll find a heat stamp with a production code. It tells you something about where and when the bag was made, but on its own it's no proof of authenticity.
